Michael Baumgardner

Michael began his career at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Christiansburg, VA, in

2012. He served 13 years on patrol, working his way through the ranks to become a Patrol

Sergeant and eventually a Patrol Lieutenant. He was a member of the Designated Marksman

Team for four years, carrying out several missions that provided overwatch to the MCSO SWAT

Team and assisting with high-profile prisoner transports.

He is currently the Firearms/ Equipment/ and Fleet Manager at MCSO. He is an operator on the

SWAT Team, Lead Firearms Instructor, Armorer, Range Master, FTO, and Range Officer for

Battle of the Badges. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from Averett University in Criminal Justice,

where he graduated Suma Cum Laude and was awarded the Malcolm Knowles Award for

highest GPA.

He holds several instructorships, including Shoot House Instructor, Red Dot Instructor, Rifle/

Pistol/ Shotgun Instructor, and Taser Instructor. Michael has also attended many specialized

courses, including an FBI Basic Sniper Observer, a Regional 3-Gun (Leadership Excellence

Award), Combat Patrol Rifle, NRA Rifle Instructor, Benelli Armorer (Team One), and Shoot

House Instructor (Team One).
